Medical Student Training in Addictions

Even with an increasing focus on substance use as an exacerbating factor in many of the most common chronic illnesses, medical students still receive very limited instruction during their medical school career related to addiction. For the past nine years, IRETA and the NeATTC have offered medical students a unique learning opportunity to counter the lack of formal instruction in addictions through a 3-week medical student internship funded by the Scaife Family Foundation. During the program, medical students from all over the country gather in Pittsburgh, PA to listen to lectures from locally practicing experts on such diverse topics as pregnant women and opiate addiction and how policy effects practice. Students also visit numerous sites where they have a chance to interact with individuals working on their recovery such as Gateway Rehabilitation Center, rated one of the top 12 rehabilitation programs in the country by Forbes Magazine, the county jail, and the Diagnostic Evaluation Center, a local psychiatric emergency room. The first session of this year's medical student internship will begin on June 10, 2008.

NeATTC staff are currently working on expanding the program to New York state in order to double the number of students trained as well as offer new and different learning opportunities. If you are interested in learning more about the Scaife Medical Student Internship, please visit the Student Programs on IRETA's website at http://www.ireta.org/ireta_main/scaife_program.html.

Treatment Planning M.A.T.R.S.:
Using the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) to Make Required Data Collection Useful

- June 06, 2008, 10:00am - 4:00pm
- St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center, Inc.
- 159 Glenwood Drive P.O. Box 470, Saranac Lake, NY 12983
- Approved for 6 CASAC, CPP & CPS Hours
This Training is designed to help counselors to transform required paperwork into clinically useful information. The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is one of the most widely used tools for the assessment of substance use-related problems. Addiction counselors working in community-based treatment centers administer the ASI, yet often fail to use findings to identify client problems, develop individualized treatment plans, and make referrals matched to client needs. Intake workers, counselors, supervisors, and managers often view the ASI assessment as time consuming and not clinically useful. In addition, supervisors and administrators often do not utilize treatment plans to monitor treatment outcomes and/or client retention. This training will teach clinicians how the ASI information can be used for clinical applications and assist in program evaluation activities. Techniques are applicable to other assessment tools.
