Funding Opportunities and Grant Writing Resources

This section is broken into two sections: funding opportunities and grant writing tools. Each area provides key resources in finding available grants and in developing grant writing skills.

Funding Opportunities

FundSource: This web site is designed to help behavioral and social scientists find research funding. It has been designed to be specific to behavioral and social science research, freely available with no subscription costs, and responsive to your needs and feedback.

Government Grants: This site allows organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. Navigation of the site is simple. Use the colored tabs and links at the top of the screen to access primary sections of the site and links on the left side of the screen to access content within each section.

Join Together Online: This site provides a funding news service that can help non-profit organizations to raise money and develop a diverse strategy. Grant announcements, foundation profiles, and program funding news keep you on top of current opportunities, innovative fundraising tactics, and funding trends. The site offers a free subscription to daily news and grant announcements.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA): The NIAAA periodically issues a list of Requests for Applications (RFAs)--a formal statement that invites grant or cooperative agreement applications in a well-defined scientific area to accomplish specific program objectives. Copies of RFAs are available online from the NIAAA Web site and NIH Grant Line.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA): This site is designed to assist in securing funding for NIDA grants and contracts. It offers general information and assistance, funding opportunities, policies and guidance, as well as a list of funded projects.

The National Institute on Health (NIH):The NIH provides extensive information on Research Grant Policies, and Guidelines and Funding Opportunities. This site also offers information on grant topics and news flashes.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): This site provides funding opportunities, grant announcements, and application forms for grant announcements.

GrantsWeb: This site is a starting point for accessing grants-related information and resources on the Internet for federal and non-federal programs. GrantsWeb organizes links to grants-related Internet sites and resources, including funding opportunities, grants data bases, policy developments, and professional activities.

NIH Grant Writing Tips Sheet: This resource provides information on application basics, planning suggestions, and preparation guidelines for NIH grant applications.

SAMSHSA Training Writing Manual: This training workshop on the grant-writing and application process has been designed to reach potential community-based grantees and prepare them with the knowledge and practice to articulate comprehensively and attend to the detail required to prepare competitive, well-developed, Federal grant applications. This Participant Manual offers both workshop assistance and take-home reference materials.

Non-Profit Guides: This web-based grant writing resource provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for non-profit organizations, charitable, educational, public organizations, and other community-minded groups.

The Office of Minority Health Resource Center: This organization maintains a database of funding resources that can help support minority health projects and other health related programs, including drug and alcohol additions. The database lists a select number of public and private foundations and organizations; fellowships; internships; scholarships; and federal grants.
